As you may recall, a few months ago I created an item containing JavaScript links to help folks exit the Beta version of the Archive: exit (beta) (JavaScript).

Note, however, that the Archive is retiring the orginal recipe. I recommend side-by-side comparisons of old and new, now, while there's still time to become inured to the Abomination. I still hold my nose, but the stench does drop over time.

Moonbat,

Good point about the priesthood in a previous forum. Try working on automobiles after 2012, same shit ... different name. Concentrate on eye-candy and forget about useability or maintenance. Someday there may be a computer hell reserved for people who create this crap.

I thankfully still use the classic screen w/out a hitch. Don't know what I'm gonna do when "the Abomination" is the only pony to ride though. Hopefully some kind soul will have a workaround et al.

I do a lot of semi-automated searching and require search results to highlight the key terms, and for results to be paged rather than infinite scroll. So I wrote a GNU Awk script to emulate the "classic" search page which can be seen here.

It should be possible to emulate displaying work result pages also since the data is available via advanced search in XML format. Just a matter of writing the HTML code building on the above Awk script.

"Linux systems have it by default"- always nice to see.

"Just a matter of writing the HTML code building", however is beyond my skill set.

But I will gladly trumpet both here and there anyone's workaround. ;-)

Unfortunately the site also seems to be coding for specific sites properties and kind souls do not register on their list.

Whats the worst thing about this "New Archive"?

Is it the loss of the useful interface?
Is it the loss of the search results?
Is it the losss of paged results?
Is it the loss of video thumbnail views?
Is it the loss of the comunity forums?
Is it the shift to an annotated 'Dropbox" site from a lively Internet library?
Is it the useless waveforms in audio files?
Is it the never returned "Lending Library" books?
Is it the increased user data colection?
Is it the ignored user suggestions and feedback after requesting them?
Is it the floating tiles and uniteligable screen cluter.
Is it the fact that trolls like me have lost the front page status of the "Most recent posts" forum listing?

If only the Library of Congress could move into the 1990's we might get somewhere.

You are quite the troll PD.

The UI, searches and type thereof are a downgrade. But it is the loss of community through the "Most recent posts" forum listing which bums me out the most. The others really suck, but the last one kills.

I'm curious about both the increased user data collection and the LoC. How is the former manifesting and I've been looking for a possible happy new home regarding the latter. Govt. agency though...

Maybe I should just realize that that doesn't matter as much I as would want it to.

I'm going to choose my worst things about the new site:
The useless icons. They are of no help, and indeed are a hindrance, to the blind community.
The loss of paged results. They are critically important if you have limited internet connectivity and want to look over search results while offline.
The useless waveform and fingerprint items in audio. I offered to pay for someone to code the option to block those derivations, but no one took me up.
Here me: no more money is coming from me until the classic interface is assured in perpetuity and admins get their rights.

Although I'm a troll, thank you.
